We asked a new hire why he was leaving our competitor to come and work for us.
‘I hear you treat your guys really well…with my last job, the boss wanted to keep us working longer so he would give us a bit of Coke so we could keep going’
He wasn’t talking about a cola brand.
At SK, we didn’t deliver drugs but rather, we sent home dinner kits.
What does this have to do with branding?
Everything.
Our company valued family and relationships. For that to come to life in a practical way and to gain a reputation of ‘treating our staff well’, we found ways to live out the value and not just state it on the wall.
We realized that many families don’t sit down for dinner anymore. One way to work on relationships is to actually spend some time together. We wanted to help our staff do that and the solution was to make them dinner. Make it easy. Make it so they wanted to open the box and get excited about what was inside.
The only thing we asked, in return for the complimentary dinner for their entire family, was to sit and eat it together. Not a big expectation but it would take some effort and intention.
After a few months of dinners, we heard things like ‘this is the first time we sat down together as a family in a very long time’. ‘We haven’t had a homemade dinner forever’.
What kind of company do you want to be known for? Dinner kits might not be in the budget right now however there are so many creative ways to demonstrate your company values and build your brand.
Let’s have a chat and talk about it!
