It was coined by Horst Schulze when he was only 16 years old and went on to be the co-founder of the iconic hotel chain. He was speaking to chamber maids, dishwashers, bus boys…essentially everyone that worked for the Ritz. Rather than being servants, serving important people, we are all important and have great value and worth. So do our jobs with excellence and with our heads held high!
It was common for my husband, CEO of our company and a workforce of 75, to be found cleaning the bathroom stalls in the staff washrooms. He wanted our team to know that he wasn’t above them in a sense of self worth and value. He would get into the job site with a shovel or help clean up at the end of the day.
He wanted to serve our staff because they served us and our company so well.
This could come off as being showy or because he was in a great mood that day. However when you really believe it and think it, it goes beyond a one time demonstration. It is a way of living and being that weaves itself into the fibre of the company.
As a leader and employer, you are giving life to your brand when you come through the door.
You are impacting your brand every day through your actions. Your team are your ‘Brand Ambassadors’, impacted by your actions and then living out the companies values with your customers.
Think about what really matters to you and why. Perhaps you can talk about these things with some trusted teammates and commit to demonstrating them. You will be well on your way to building a strong brand and have a greater influence. Maybe you will coin the next great motto!
